The President of India

The President of India is the Head of State, head of Government and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. The President also presides over the Cabinet and a number of independent federal agencies with missions and responsibilities as diverse as the Department of Defense and the Environmental Protection Agency.

A good President must have the skills and knowledge to make the right decisions for the nation. They should be able to lead their country and inspire the people to believe in their vision for the future. A successful President must be a strong communicator both in public and private settings.

In the modern era, Presidents have been credited with creating major legislative achievements such as Social Security, Medicare and No Child Left Behind. The President has the power to approve or reject treaties, make appointments within the Executive Branch and propose legislation. They must also report to Congress annually on the state of the Union.

The Constitution states that the person with the highest number of votes will be chused as President by the House of Representatives. If no candidate receives a majority, then from the top five on the list the House will select one. If the Electoral College fails to elect a President, the Vice President will become the President.

The President is the foremost defender of the Constitution. They can prevent unconstitutional decisions of the parliament or state governments by refusing to give their compulsory assent/government orders (GO) for making them into laws of the land. The President also has the power to repeal the unconstitutional activities of the chief justice/supreme court after a proper trial.
